What Families Actually Use (and What They Do Not)
We have built a lot of features into TributePoint over the years. Most families do not use all of them, and that is fine. Below is an honest description of what almost every family ends up needing — and what is genuinely optional — so you can plan without feeling overwhelmed.
What Almost Every Family Uses
- The biography section — even just three short paragraphs about the person's life. This is the heart of the page and the part most visitors read first.
- One strong portrait photograph — clear, well-lit, recognisable. This becomes the WhatsApp preview when the link is shared.
- The funeral service details — date, time, venue, with a map link. This is what most relatives are actually looking for in the first 48 hours.
- The shareable link — a clean URL that can be copied and pasted into a WhatsApp message or printed on the funeral programme.
- The condolence wall — somewhere for friends and distant relatives to leave a message the family can read later.
What Is Genuinely Optional
- Custom themes. The default theme is dignified and works well for most families. You can change it later if you want.
- Live-streaming. Useful for families with relatives abroad. If everyone is local, you may not need it.
- The donations module. Add this only if the family has decided to accept contributions and has a bank account or SnapScan code ready.
- Custom URL. The default URL works fine. A custom URL (e.g. tributepoint.co.za/john-doe) is a small touch that some families appreciate, particularly for printed programmes.
- QR code on the printed programme. Helpful at the venue so mourners can scan and access the page later, but not essential.
Privacy Controls You Should Know About
Every memorial page can be set to one of three visibility levels, and you can change this at any time:
- Public — visible to anyone, indexed by Google. Best for community figures, public mourning, and pages that need to be easily discovered by name.
- Unlisted — not indexed by search engines, but viewable to anyone with the link. This is the most common choice for family-focused memorials.
- Private — only viewable to people you have invited via email. Best for very private family circumstances or where security is a concern.
You can also moderate condolence messages before they appear publicly, hide the donation total, hide the home address, and remove individual photographs at any time.
What Happens to the Page Long-Term
Memorial pages stay live indefinitely. We do not auto-delete inactive pages. If the family ever wants to take the page down, an administrator can delete it from the dashboard or by emailing info@tributepoint.co.za. Many families return to their loved one's page on birthdays, anniversaries, and the date of the death — and add fresh photographs or messages over time. The page evolves with the family.
Accessibility and Older Family Members
Many of the people who will visit the page are not necessarily comfortable with technology. The page is designed to work on older Android phones, with low data usage where possible, large readable text, and simple navigation. The default theme passes WCAG 2.1 AA contrast requirements. If a family member is struggling to view the page, our support team can talk them through it on the phone — call 083 621 0224, Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not sell your data. Photos, biographies, and contact details are never shared with third parties for marketing purposes.
- We do not require credit card details to use the free plan. Free really means free.
- We do not auto-bill or upgrade you to a paid plan without your consent.
- We do not allow other families to take over your loved one's page. Only the people you have added as administrators can edit it.
- We do not use AI to generate biographies or eulogies on your behalf. The words on your loved one's page are yours.
