Mervyn grew up on College Road in Overport, Durban. As a boy, he was deeply connected to his local community, serving proudly as an altar boy at Christ Church Overport. He was a man of great ambition and entrepreneurial spirit in the Durban logistics sector. He built a career in the shipping industry, founding Marvin Freight before successfully transitioning the business into Marvin Trucking during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Through this the family was able to move into a home in Durban North in 1995. He was a loving father who always did his absolute best for his family. Mervyn was also deeply loyal to his roots, making a point of communicating regularly and keeping up with his beloved siblings and cousins over the years. While his later years back in the Overport flats were marked by a long, difficult, and complex battle with alcoholism—a disease that brought strain to our family relationships—we choose to remember the full picture of who he was. Behind the struggles was a man who loved deeply, and whose quiet acts of kindness and support will never be forgotten. We remember the good, appreciate his hard work, and carry the quiet moments of his love with us.
