A gentle hand

When a loved one passes away, the hours that follow can feel overwhelming. This gentle guide walks you through what to do first — and reminds you that you do not have to do it alone.

1. Take a breath, and make the first call

There is no need to rush. When you are ready, call our 24-hour line on 0800 000 246. Our team will guide you calmly through the immediate steps and, where needed, arrange the respectful collection and transfer of your loved one into our care.

2. Gather a few key documents

When you are able, it helps to locate the deceased's identity document, and any funeral policy or cover details. Do not worry if you cannot find everything immediately — we will help you with the paperwork and death registration.

3. Inform close family

Reach out to immediate family and a few close friends who can support you and help share the news. In many South African families, this is also the time to begin consulting elders on cultural and traditional wishes.

4. Let us carry the arrangements

Once your loved one is in our care, we will sit with you — in person or by phone — to plan the service according to your family's wishes, culture and budget. From the venue and programme to transport and catering, we handle every detail with dignity.

Above all, remember: grief has no timetable. Be gentle with yourself, lean on those around you, and let us take care of the rest.
